RESOLVE Alberta and Awo Taan Healing Lodge Present

Indigenous Healing and Trauma:
Intergenerational Solutions

RESOLVE Alberta and Awo Taan Healing Lodge are organizing this year's RESOLVE conference, which is an annual event held in the three prairie provinces (Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba). Every three years, Alberta is the site for the national
conference, and this year we will hold the event at the University of Calgary.

This one and a half day event will begin with an introductory evening on Tuesday, October 4th, 2016 from 6:00-9:00pm MST. This evening includes a brief talk and presentation of annual RESOLVE awards, this year for exceptional Indigenous community leaders focused on eliminating violence. On Wednesday, October 5th, 2016, from 8:00am-5:00pm MST, we will host a variety of keynote speakers, informative panels, and plenary/breakout sessions on various topics related all aspects of Indigenous intergenerational trauma and healing. We will highlight the perspectives of recognized Indigenous researchers and community experts. We will also offer concurrent sessions for researchers and community members to share evidence of best practices in promoting the health of Indigenous communities.
RESOLVE Alberta is part of RESOLVE, which is a tri-prairie research network that co-ordinates and supports research aimed at ending violence, especially violence involving girls and women. The RESOLVE network is affiliated with the University of Calgary, University of Saskatchewan, University of Manitoba, University of Regina, University of Alberta, University of Winnipeg, and Brandon University.

The goal of RESOLVE is to reduce the incidence and impact of violence and abuse by:
  • creating and evaluating strategies to address violence and abuse;
  • communicating our research results to the public and policy makers;
  • promoting education, awareness, and social change.
To accomplish this we:
  • work with community groups to identify areas where additional research needs to be done;
  • develop action-oriented research projects;
  • work in interdisciplinary teams in partnership with community groups and other universities and centres in Canada;
  • we train students and members of the community organization in research methods

Awo Taan Healing Lodge: Shield

The mission of Awo Taan is to provide protection and support against family violence and all forms of abuse through community services guided by Native traditional teachings. The shelter operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. There are on-site and on-call counselors 24 hours a day. Women and children stay at the shelter for a period of up to three weeks. If shelter is required beyond that period, clients may arrange for an extended stay or are referred to other agencies.  Awo Taan supports clients with the resources to help ensure they do not return to an abusive situation.

Appropriately named "Awo Taan", which means "shield" in the Blackfoot language, the shelter is blanketed in a unique atmosphere where the traditional wholistic and spiritual teachings of the Aboriginal people’s Medicine Wheel are practiced.
This approach benefits Aboriginal women and their children in helping them through the healing process within the comfort of their community. The Awo Taan Healing Lodge is dedicated to supporting the emotional, mental, physical, and spiritual healing and wellbeing of women during their time of crisis and beyond. The shelter offers a full range of in-house crisis and outreach crisis, healing, and prevention programs. There is also a children’s program to ensure each child’s emotional, mental, physical, and spiritual healing and wellbeing are supported as well.
