Responsible for over 2400km of roadways, Lethbridge County exemplifies the value that asset management work brings to a municipality. These roadways, with their many bridges and culverts, are essential in supporting the municipality’s local economy, which is heavily reliant on agriculture exports. In partnerships with PSD, the County constructed a risk model of their extensive bridge network. The risk model was unique insofar that it incorporated increasing demand requirements on drainage, irrigation, and bridge infrastructure through the usage of vital sensory data, while also identifying the detour availability of auxiliary roadways should a bridge become inoperable. The analysis identified the ever-changing environment that requires adaptation within planning and engineering strategies, which will assist the County in future capital project prioritization and increasing council buy-in for asset management initiatives.
