The Alberta Museums Association (AMA) was founded in 1971 as a non-profit society through which museum workers could meet for the benefit of Alberta's developing museum community. Today, the AMA counts more than 200 Institutional and 250 Individual Members among its membership of Alberta museums and museum professionals.

COVID-19 Health & Safety Toolkits for the Museum and Heritage Sector

With funding support from Travel Alberta, the AMA is working to provide resources and supports to enable the museum and heritage sector to reopen and operate safely during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Click here to learn more about the project.

As part of this project, Health & Safety Toolkits are now available to order through the AMA Bookstore. The toolkits include physical wayfinding signage and floor stickers to direct visitors and encourage physical distancing, along with free access to digital resources. Organizations in the museum and heritage sector may order up to three toolkits; orders will be filled based on demand, while supplies last. Click here to learn more and place an order.

Museums For Me: A New Initiative to Promote and Celebrate Museums

To help our sector position itself sustainably and competitively in a rapidly changing world, the AMA is working with partners from coast to coast to coast to engage Canadians on why museums matter.

With Museums For Me, we are seeking input from Canadians on the value and meaning of museums in their lives and to their communities. Through this project, we hope to strengthen the public perception of the value of Canada’s museums, and to gain powerful new insights into the roles museums play, how best to adapt, and how best to communicate their value for Canadians, to Canadians, through our storytelling and engagement efforts.

Corporate Climate Leaders Program

The AMA is proud to be joining Edmonton’s Corporate Climate Leaders Program (CCLP), offered in partnership with Green Economy Canada. Community emissions are responsible for 98% of Edmonton’s overall greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and buildings and industry account for about 65% of that. Wanting to be part of the solution, the AMA is joining the CCLP to better understand and manage our GHG emissions and to develop and implement innovative climate solutions.

The AMA is also extending this partnership with Green Economy Canada to provide tools and resources for museums across the province to set their own GHG reduction targets, conduct a climate risk assessment, and find sources of funding to help green their operations. In addition, we will be running workshops with select Edmonton-area museums to develop GHG reduction plans and move action planning forward. The learning from these workshops will be shared with all AMA members to increase the capacity of Alberta’s museums to advance their sustainability goals.
