Calgary Roads, partnered with Associated Engineering, has developed a Street Light Risk Model to assess street light risk. The model uses Weibull distribution, a mathematical model widely used in reliability engineering to predict the probability of street light pole failure based on the pole’s characteristics and historical fallen pole data. The Risk Model can be calibrated for greater accuracy when new fallen pole data become available. The Risk Model has been used in the past two years and has demonstrated great benefits in capital budget projection, inspection program planning and critical pole replacement program planning.
