In February 2019, the Alberta Aviation Museum (AAM) committed to a process with Hatlie Group to explore the sustainability of the museum and to examine in detail all areas of their operations and governance. From an audit of programs and services, to a review of human resource management, a governance review, and a detailed analysis of revenue and expenses, Hatlie Group and AAM worked collaboratively to identify areas of strength and gaps that needed to be addressed. The result of this work was a plan for long-term viability that included adjustments to the museum’s organizational structure, governance practices, and the implementation of a revenue model that ensured ongoing financial support for operations. This session will highlight the various intentional steps the museum went through and provide an honest and open discussion of the challenges – and successes – experienced.
